Self-Esteem Counselling

Poor self-esteem impacts significantly upon the way we view ourselves, other people, and the world, diminishing our sense of entitlement to present and future happiness. Perceptions of the verbal and nonverbal messages of our upbringing, friendships, relationships, education and employment influence these self-views and by default our subsequent capacities for socialisation. Although many of the beliefs we form about ourselves are negative and even false, we frequently establish them as our rules for living. Operating from a baseline of inadequacy we are likely to present as unworthy within most or all the aforementioned environments, whilst continued undesirable experiences reinforce the negative beliefs we hold about ourselves!

Waterford Counselling Centre can help you to explore and literally truth-test long standing, deep-rooted beliefs about yourself and your potential. You may not even be wholly aware of some of these beliefs, thus inhibiting your opportunities to question them. Working together we can examine ways in which the patterns you have unintentionally and unknowingly created, may actually be perpetuating a vicious cycle of low self-esteem. Rather than serving their intended damage limitation purpose, your rigid, self-judgemental thought processes and defensive behaviours exacerbate feelings of guilt, shame, embarrassment, hopelessness and inadequacy.

Through the identification of low self-esteem triggers, alternative thought, communication and response patterns can be developed. Ultimately the integration of self-assertion skills within this approach paves the way for you to build genuine resilience for situations where you have historically over-invested in others perceived opinions of you.

Your current and past levels of self-esteem do not have to define who you are and how you live your life. Remember if you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always got!

Seeking and accepting support is a strength and not a weakness so please feel free to contact me.
